Coastal zone management and essential fish habitat registration and validation in Mirabelo Bay and along the coasts of Ierapetra (eastern Crete Island)

Project info
Description:

The aim of the project was to investigate the environmental condition of the coastal ecosystem of Lasithi and especially the study of the habitats that are important for the growth of juvenile fish of high ecological, demographic and management value. The specific objective was the study of biology, ecology and chemical composition of tissues and sensory characteristics of Mullus surmuletus with emphasis on populations of a particular variety known as the red mullet of the rocks of Lasithi. This ecotype is found in all the shallow coasts of Lassithi and especially in the southern coastal area having, as a traditional resource of fishing, a great reputation and commercial value beyond the limits of Crete. The investigation of the parametres that characterize this edible product of high commercial value the rational management, quantitative assessment and recording its acceptance by the public and also the further promotion and publicity of its quality are also objectives of the program.
