Abstract

The distribution of the benthic amphipod fauna in Heraklion Bay along a bathymetric gradient from 70 to 160 m was investigated during 1988-89 and 1991-92 by means of quantitative grab sampling. A total of 1456 individuals belonging to 38 species was found in 305 grab samples. Differences in the distribution of the dominant species as well in the structure of the amphipod community, as evidenced by cluster analysis, indicate the presence of distinct environmental conditions between the upper and lower circalittoral zone of Heraklion Bay. Temporal variability although evident does not clearly correspond to expected seasonal trends.
