KRANIOS (ESPA Synergasia 2009)

Project info
Description:

The program KRANIOS focuses on the development and dissemination of novel technologies for the control of reproduction, larval rearing and fattening of a new species (the meager, Argyrosomus regius) that is of great interest to the aquaculture industry in the Mediterranean region. The objective is to differentiate the production, improve the competitiveness of the industry and contribute to the sustainable development of the sector in Greece and the European Union, in general. At the same time, the program will strengthen the connection between research and production with the creation of a collaboration network among national research organizations and production facilities of the aquaculture sector in Greece.

The scientific objectives of the program include (a) the study of the major parameters involved in the successful rearing of meager, (b) the development of rearing protocols that will allow the implementation of the results by the industry in Greece and the European Union and (c) the training of the technical personnel of the aquaculture sector in Greece on the new methods for the rearing of meager, which will result from the study.

The implementation of the program will follow seven (7) major research actions (workpackages, WP). Workpackage 1 includes the study of reproductive biology of meager and the production of high quality fertilized eggs. Workpackage 2 includes the rearing of the larvae that will hatch from the eggs, using the Mesocosm and intensive rearing methods, with the objective of producing fingerlings for grow-out. Workpackage 3 includes the grow-out of the fingerlings in sea cage facilities and the study of the feeding behavior of the fish. Workpackage 4 focuses on the effect of rearing conditions (e.g., stocking density and nutrition) on stress, with the objective of developing optimized rearing methods that will enhance the welfare of the reared fish. Workpackage 5 includes the study of nutritional requirements and metabolism of meager and the development of environmentally friendly grow-out diets. Workpackage 6 includes the study of any pathologies that may appear and their management, in order to develop preventive methods in commercial production conditions. Finally, Workpackage 7 includes the evaluation of the final product, as it regards it nutrient content and nutritional value, and will include also an evaluation of the acceptance of the fish by the Greek consumer.
